Now this was DAMNED HARD WORK I can tell you

Got shots from 3 different angles and I didn't think any of them would be much good - so I was a bit pleased.

This is full frame from very close in as I wanted all the eye detail and to see the turquoise fore-wing roots.

Might be too tight for some folks, so apologies but you cant have everything in the frame and good detail too - they are just too big - this guy was only sitting quietly 'cos he'd just eaten a small dog

Looks like you got the detail well and truely on this one Mr Astbury.
It shows what most people will never ever see. A very fine shot there. :toast:

The tight cropping works fine for me Andy. Emphasises the bits that are sharp.
Very nice detail. There's plenty of room for both- wide crops and tight crops.
And who's El Guido when he's at home ?
Cheers

Hello Andy.

Very nice and well done, The eyes are stunning and as you know I've tried hard this year to get one of these and it just did'nt happen.

Tight crops work well if you get the composition right and this works very well.

For those who want to know who El Guido is that'll be me.

All the best Andy.

A cracking shot. These ultra close-ups work for me and I think if they're there for the taking then it's good to maximize on the oppurtunity and get them if you can to compliment the full-body shots.
Plus, as Major says, it reveals details that are easily over-looked.

A lovely close up Andy, you have caught the blue on the eye very nicely.

Bit of a coincidence really, just spent the day with these - had them sitting on my bins at one point!

Hi Andy,

Stunning stunning detail. Colours and sharpness are spot on as is the composition.

An image being damned difficult to get is what makes wildlife photograhy so much fun......................10% of the time, the other 90% it's just bloomin frustrating

Stunning work Andy

Regards

a great image Andy, very nicely taken. Lovely composition too. It's strange how the very occasional Brown Hawker will let you get close whereas most won't let you anywhere near them. As you say, perhaps he'd just eaten

That looks pretty smokey to me Andy, why don't you take it up for a living?
BTW have you seen my cocker spaniel anywhere?
Top top shot.
