Common Darter?
Hi went for a walk this evening, took the Nikon D200 and Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8, no tripod, just out for a stroll, around the local lake, and dragons all around. Looking at my images this evening I feel that the would benefit from more DOF...any help C&C welcome as I am a keen rookie.

Hi Dave. Nice shot which could do with a little sharpening. DOF is always a problem with these and without a lot of clever image stacking you will never get them all in focus Its just the way they are built !(Unless they are flat on to you.) With this one you might get the body and side/head sharp but the wings ? very difficult. Good shot though.
Cheers

Thanks John
I still have so much to learn, and post processing makes my head hurt, to say the least..

Common Darter it is Dave - a female, judging by the colours and the fact you can just make out the tip of the ovipositor below the 2nd segment from the tip of the abdomen.

The image could do with reprocessing to bring the file size up from 58Kb to around 200Kb max at 72dpi - then add some more sharpening

not a bad effort Dave. In addition to the advice above, I would suggest getting yourself a bit lower so the camera is level with the dragonfly.

Nits covered really, some blurring of the wings is virtually unavoidable and isn't such a problem if all of the body is sharp. Ask Andy about DoF boxes.
