I was not sure if this has been posted anywhere here at NPN yet, but I just got the OP Magazine for September 2008 and there is an amazing "Long Lens Landscape" article by one of NPN's ESS Moderators Guy Tal. A really wonderful article with excellent examples and a very fine data sheet too. Congratulations, Guy.... :toast:

Awesome job Guy!! The pics are terrific - the aspens one is one of my favorites of yours. For anyone who's interested, the article is available online here.

Dang it! I get news like this and always feel left out in that I get my copy a little later. I look forward to getting my copy in the mail... maybe tomorrow. Congratulations Guy.

My copy hasn't got here yet either, but I know I will read it in its entirety. Way to go Guy, it's always great to see fellow NPNer's name in print.

I just got it today. Beautiful photography. Congratulations on the feature.

Excuse my peevishness, but
The text in point one, "A Little Perspective," begins on shaky ground. Long lenses don't compress scenes. A long lens enables you to fill the frame with a subject from a more distant perspective. It is where the camera is that determines perspective, which IS state later in the paragraph. Longer focal lengths crop more than shorter focal lengths, period. You have to move to change your perspective.

Thanks everyone!

Pete, your peevishness is gladly accepted. I opened the paragraph addressing a common observation (the so-called "compression" effect, which is really a subjective term) and went on to describe some of the principles behind it, trying not to get too bogged down with technical minutia:

"(...) making objects appear closer to the camera at any given perspective (the spatial relationship between the camera and subject), which allows you to stand farther away from the subject and to include fewer background elements for a given subject size [compared to lenses of shorter focal length]"

I believe that's an accurate statement.
