Interesting that Canon really does seem to have been hit hard by the 1DIII focussing debacle - there are quite a few images from the Olympics now showing the Pro photographers pools where you would normally expect to see a sea of white lenses with just the odd black lens evident, at a rough head count it now seems to be 55:45, in favour of Nikon - here is one example

I would think it has as much to do with the abilities of the latest Nikon bodies as the inabilities of the Canons!
Nikon now have three bodies that would not look out of place in that arena, with a fourth imminent

This Canon guy seems to be doing all right, check out his blog!
I was chatting to Dave Canon at Getty the other day and he was telling me that the MKIII for golf etc is awesome, but for fast moving subjects like football and the olympics that alot of guys will sneak a D3 in their bag. Getty had Canon come over with a brand new MkIII and a brand new lens, and when they tested it in the office it was 10cm out!!!!

Personally I'm waiting for the mark IV / V to come out, even if the mk III's autofocus was working properly there are still a few features that I would want in the camera which the mk III currently lacks and I for one can't afford to keep upgrading every time Canon brings out a new camera or indeed afford to swap from Canon to Nikon as some people seem to be doing
ie
- More resolution 16-20 mp
- Better screen (on a par with the D3)
- Better dust control on the sensor
- cheaper initial price...
- full frame...not sure?!?..the 1.3 crop is a good thing for long lens photography
- better noise control at high iso's (on a par with the D3) won't currently push my 1d2 past Iso 320 as I don't like the noise
