Generally the number of shutter realeases can be determined by the file number if 'continous' is the selected mode. As the file numbering can be reset manually, how does one determine the true number of shutter releases on the 40D.
Thanks
Its in the exif information in each file. CS2 on a PC will have it in fiile info menu pick. I've read that you can also retrieve the information using a third party exif reader/editor, but I have not actually tried one.

Gene, is that a Mac vs PC thing or a 30D vs 40D thing?
I'm using CS2 on a Mac, and the pulldown "file info" doesn't contain that information on my 30D images. My third-party exif reader doesn't show it either, so I'm wondering if there's a Mac/PC difference here (not likely) or if the info is offered in the 40D but not the 30D (more likely.)

The only way to really know a true shutter actuation count on the Canon x0D series cameras is to send it in to the factory. I got this info. from Canon.

This gets asked a lot. I can (usually) find this info for my Nikon bodies in CS3 on a Mac by going to File/File Info and then selecting Advanced in the list, scroll down to the ns.adobe.com/exif/1.0/aux value.

Thanks, John. Canon told me the same thing, but that was a couple years ago and it occurred to me they might have upgraded the 40D to provide that exif info. I know the "1" series bodies have it embedded in exif.

Interesting--I just checked my latest image on my old Canon 350 which is sequentially numbered as 1022 but in the exif info it says exposure number 98 so something is off a bit. Does it get reset if you download new firmware or something? Or does that number refer to the number of exposures with the specific lens that is installed? This is a new lens and I bet I've only shot about 98 exposures with it--Larry
