Starting a new thread because I didn't want to hijack the fall colors thread.
Dave,
Don't know about the exact timing of the Denali HWY colors, but there is a spot that you can go and avoid most of the hunters.
You may want to double check me on this, but the game management unit that is just on the east side of the susitna river is off limits to ATV aided hunting. There is a road that goes north just to the east side of the river (shown in the gazetteer) and you can get a good way back with a 4wd if you have decent clearance. Was back there in 2006 and had no problems getting around with my toyota tacoma, but the creeks might have been a bit too much for a vehicle with lower clearance. Only saw a couple of cars back there and they looked more like gold panners.
And here's a pic that shows about the worst the crossings get and gives you an idea of why a lowere clearance vehicle might not be a good idea.
Skip and Dave,
The area is the Clearwater Mountains, very nice place. Used to be the home of Alaska's largest strip gold mine, there are still some active mines in the area. It is a rugged and very beautiful place and with plenty of wildlife (hiding from the hunters). This image I took last summer in early August.

Thanks to both of you. I wish I had a 4 wheel drive vehicle... don't think my little ol' Saturn could manage those river crossings
Carl - great shot, that's what I'm looking for, is this the same area that Skip was talking about? If so, I probably won't be able to get to it with my vehicle. Or is this approachable in a smaller car? Thanks again, to both of you. Appreciate your input.
Dave,
Yes, this is the area Skip is talking about. The photo above is a three mile hike from the Denali Hwy, no 4wd needed. Email me if you want a detailed description on how to get there.
