Earwig
Spent far too long chasing this little fella around so I stuck a stick in a lump of clay in a dish - put him on it - and he climbed up and sat still for a millisecond looking all confused. Long enough to get a picture or two. Even harder than the whirlygigs.

My father grew dahlias for sale on Ormskirk market for many years and provided homes for many families of earwigs until they were forcibly evicted when the flowers were sold. Although considered a pest for nibbling prized plants they are omnivores and will eat genuine pest species as part of their very varied diet. Nice image of a very distinctive insect. Presumably Forticula auricularia?

Thanks David
I grow show dahlias too but the insects are not a real problem at the moment. Your ID is correct as far as I can tell but I am no earywig specialist !! I thinks its an early stager one too
