Hi,

I'm going to Scotland in the next month or 2, I would ideally like to go by plane, as it would save the long drive.

Has any one got any tips for getting a 600 aboard?

Cheers
Brian

Have a look at this earlier thread, but in my experience i have travelled all over the world with mine and never had any problems, as long as the backpack is within size, and you try to make it appear light when carrying it the airport staff will never know the weight. One good tip from the earlier thread is to remove the waist straps, and also dont strap a tripod to the outside, put it in your luggage. I also pack chargers etc in my hold luggage, and just leave the backpack for lenses, and bodies.

I would agree with Steve in my experience Brioan - that said some airports security staff are more picky than others - I've had hold baggae related problems at Coventry and Stanstead in the past and found Birmingham/Manchester to be the easiest. Tends to be the smaller airports which are fussier (which might not help you).

As a back up I have a Peli case (with padlocks etc) in the boot of my car, which is sized to fit my back-pack in. If there's a problem going through security I have left time to go back to the car, place back-pack in Peli (putting bodies etc up to the weight allownace in a smaller backpack) and trusted the padding of the snuggly fitting backpack and the robustness of the peli case to the hold: a lasrt resort but gives you an option if you do find a problem at the last minute.

Hi Brian,

I have had mine with me to Australia and no problems at all. I carried a 600mm F4, a 300mm F2.8, a 17-35mm F2.8 and a 150mm F2.8 all in one backpack together with some filters etc weighing a total of 17 KG.
Just take the hood off and shove it into the smalles backpack it will fit in and when they ask you if you have any handluggage just smile and say you only carry a small backpack.
What is important is to tell the staff behind the scanner that you carry photo equippement. That way they will be more carefull with it and they do not make too much trouble.

Go for it!

Greetings,

Agree with Jeroen Brian, I pack the 500, 300, 70-200, 24-70 2.8s, two MKIIIs cables back-ups in a Kata 205 bag with no worries. But hoods do go in the hold luggage.

I suppose it makes a difference from snakes.... Not had an issue yet with my 500mm, i'd second the Peli cases, i highly rate them.
