I'll be leaving in a week for a trip to GNP.
This will be the second time I've visited the park. Other than the boat launch area along Saint Mary Lake would anyone know of any areas along the north side that I can reach the shoreline that doesn't require a steep descent down a hill?

The whole north shore is a steep descent! Have you thought about a sea kayak?

Just returned from my first trip to GNP...loved it. If you're on the east side, why not head up to Swiftcurrent lake at Many Glaciers? It is very accessible and I personally thought this area was more photogenic at sunrise than St. Mary's lake. And it's only 15-20 minutes away (based on my drive from Many Glacier lodge to the Wild Goose Island overlook for sunrise shots at St. Mary). Also saw several bears and moose around Many Glacier if you're looking for wildlife.

I went to GNP in July for the first time. What a fabulous location for us photographers! Before I went I had done a lot of research on the web and saw a couple of photos that were taken from the Saint Mary shoreline and had a lot of beautiful small rocks/pebbles in the foreground. One of the photos said that you could get down to this shoreline somewhere near the Wild Goose Island viewpoint. I looked high and low while I was there and also asked around, but couldn't find any way to get down to the lake there. There must be a way and I sure do hope someone can tell us. But if not, I would agree with Jamie. The Many Glacier area was by far my favorite part of the park. Swiftcurrent Lake is very accessible and has an infinite number of photo possibilities. I hope your trip is as great as mine was

I was there last month and as far as getting to the shoreline from the Goose Island overlook, it appeared that there was just a trail that lead from the overlook down to the lake. I saw one guy heading down this trail the morning I was there. I didn't think it was an overly steep approach, but that would depend on perception. Shooting from the overlook is certainly iconic. As mentioned, Swiftcurrent Lake is very easy to access, and its also a pretty nice view. I posted shots from both places back in July, if you want to see examples.

Thanks everyone for your responses. I'll be spending time on Logan Pass, the Highline Trail, the Many Glacier area and around Two Medicine.
I also emailed my question to Tony Bynum, a photographer based in East Glacier that I found on photo.net. He told me there is indeed a trail down to the shoreline from the Wild Goose overlook. He stated that it wasn't to steep but as I recall from a previous trip, that area seemed somewhat steep to me. But I think I'll maybe give it another try. If anyone is interested he has a nice blog that includes updates about the park. Check it out.
