heres some images of the recent flood in Supai.

Go to "Images" and click on "Birds Eye View"

Reports have it that Havasu Falls which was 70 feet high, is now only 60 feet. The last image is of a huge crater formed by the water. Visitor permits for the fall have been cancelled en masse, ith an idea of reopening sometime next year. All the bridges have to rebuilt...

This makes the last flood (10 years ago that ripped out all the travertine) look like a Sunday School picnic.

Incredible images! I am fortunate to have seen the canyon from the junction with the Colorado up to Mooney Falls (`6miles). It was an awesomely beautiful oasis where we spent the entire day during our Grand Canyon river trip in 1983, and again in 1988. 1997 was a huge disappointing visit due to the flood that occurred there I believe in 1994 or thereabouts. In 2002 there was little improvement from the '97 visit. It sounds like this one may have destroyed whatever new travertine deposits formed since 1994.

It might pay for the Havasupai to build some large artificial beaver ponds from the village area upstream to as far as their money will take them in the hope of protecting a steady tourist inflow of dollars. The ponds could act as sponges to keep damage from future flood events to as minimum as mankind can hope for in influencing the effects of Mother Nature. They would only provide a small benefit though with a flood of this magnitude.

Sometimes nature isn't so pretty! I liked the blue water rather than the muddy brown version.

Have to wonder if that damn dam maybe made things worse on this wet weekend than it would have been if the natural flow would have been permitted to occur.

We visited Havasu Falls in March, this year. For those who don't know what the falls usually look like, I've included a photo from our trip.
