I need to ask anyway.

So I am planning two different trips and need some advise.

1st. I am traveling to Boulder October 9-12 and I am looking for locations to shoot. I know unfortunately this will most likely be past peak color, but hey, what can I do about that?? I figure the Flatirons are a must but I was curious if there was much else very close to the Boulder area (<50 mi)?

2nd. I'm gonna head to Zion this fall for color in the main canyon. I know that peak cant be predicted, but from what I remember the 1st week in November is generally good. I have the 31st of October off so I was planning a trip from Oct. 30-Nov 4. Do these dates sound good/reasonable?

Thanks for the comments!
Andy

From the NPN archives: 'Autumn in Zion'

..which includes a link to an NPS page, 'Zion Fall Update'.

Rocky Mountain NP is on;y 45 minutes or less from Boulder, so that would be an obvious choice. Indian Peaks, like the Brainaird Lake Rec. Area is (are?) even closer.

Eldorado Canyon SP would be a worthwhile visit as well to the south of town.

Eldorado Canyon for fall cottonwoods and South Boulder Creek, the south (Eldo) TH for the Mesa trail for sumac, autumn grasses, Flatirons, and cottonwoods, S. Boulder Creek (by the trailer park along hwy. 93) for grasses and cottonwoods, Flatirons.

Andy, agree on the RMNP via the Peak to Peak road from Boulder; also the Boulder Creek from the Library parking lot; the Red Rocks Park near Golden, CO. You might also consider I-70 to Loveland Pass and some of the old mining towns like Georgetown, Idaho Springs, Silver Plume and possibly Guanella Pass out of Georgetown. Don Mamosser has published a paperback that lists photo opportunities for CO.

I'd suggest a day along the Front Range near Boulder. Perfect time of year for beautiful colors in the grasses, sumac and scrub. You can get broader views from along Hwy 128 between Hwy 93 and Indiana. The intersection of hwy 128 and Indiana has yielded many of my favorite images of the Flatirons, including the one posted here - obviously not a fall shot, but gives you a good idea of the views. That's snow-covered Indian Peaks in the distance on the left; Longs Peak on the far right.

Closer in, the Flatirons Mesa Trail (~0.5 mile south of hwy 128 on hwy 93) is a worthy stop. Chautauqua Park in Boulder will also yield some fantastic views.

Then maybe a day dedicated to RMNP, and a separate day along the Peak-to-Peak Hwy and Indian Peaks Wilderness. You could combine them, but I think you'd feel stretched for time depending on how much time you plan to spend shooting.

Further south, a day in Red Rocks and Roxborough State Park would round things out nicely.

Enjoy!
