The gift
This gannet was presenting the feather to another bird out of shot. I hope this post comes out as I have had a problem with the computer reading certain files. After 'save as' in photoshop and saving the reduced image to a folder the image (several actualy) dissapeared. After trying again, I was informed on saving that another file already exists so I knew they were there somewhere. They couldnt be seen when clicking on the folder in the file tree and they weren't showing on file list. Trying stuff on a very hit or miss basis (total muppet with computers) I discovered that if I went to File/open as/ and changed the view menu to thumbnail they then reappeared as a tile amongst the thumbnails. If anyone knows what is going on I'd be most grateful for some advice. I'ts never happened before and whilst I know that my version of Photoshop CS cannot read the raw files from my 30D it has never had a problem with jpegs.

Sounds like you're simply missing the '.jpg' bit on the end of each file. If you can see them in the browser, then right click each one and add .jpg to the end of the name. Hopefully that might clear it up for you.

As to why it happened - you probably managed to delete the .jpg bit when typing in a new name for your photo in Photoshop. Photoshop will generally only show image files in it's built in file browser window - so it simply wouldn't pick up on the files without .jpg as being images...hence they didn't appear.
