First Impressions
Hello, my name is Ken Smith. This is my first post. This marks the end of my lurking for over a year.

Another Mt Rainier sunrise from a different pov. Often folks drive past this scene enroute to Mowich Lake. The fog convinced me to stop and watch before heading up to the trailhead. Shot at the end of last month.

Nikon D300; Nikon 17-35mm zoom; Hand-held 4stop grad hd nd; tripod;

I admire landscape shots and need to improve. You either got 'it' or you struggle. I shall struggle, I am purely amature, and I enjoy every minute of my freedom as an amature. I shoot mostly garden and flowers. Comments welcome. Ken S :wavey:

The mist leading up the valley and light on the peak really make it for me, Ken. Good to see you posting some images over here! This one definitely tells the story of the NW effectively. It has a very natural look to it. Compositionally, it's hard to find fault with this one. I really can't find anything I'd change here. You'll really like NPN, both here and on the main forums.

Hell of a first post Ken. I've eyed this perspective a couple times myself but the fireweed has never been out for what I've wanted to do there. This may be as good of a shot as it may possible to take here. If I had to nit about anything, that flower in the bottom left corner is a bit bright and draws my eye away from the valley.

I sure would like to struggle like that!!! It is an awesome image and I would love to have something like that in my portfolio. Keep up the good work and show us some more posts.

Ken, I

'm not really saying this to make you feel good but this is one of the best images I've seen here on the PNW forum. I love the mist and over alll balance in this image. To me this image scrams "This is the Pacific Northwest".

Please keep them coming!

Welcome Ken,

This is a knockout of a first post. A very nice balance to this scene. Color is excellent and I love those clouds.

Thanks for Sharing!

Great first post, Ken. I echo the sentiments of the others. The sky, fog and silhouetted FG trees really make this shot for me. The layered effect also draws the eyes through the scene very effectively. Well done and welcome to the forum!

Hello PNW et al: Thanks for the warm welcome! I have admired many shots of the NPN group. You have the best outdoor shooters. When I speak to struggling, it is because I hold no match to consistent quality, nor do I get out enough. I will benefit from comments and influence. I hope to grow, avoid being a one--hit wonder. Regardless, I keep shooting because even a blind squirrel finds an occassional nut! Just being outside is fun, including my own back yard...and cameras are magic, the coolest gagets. You all keep your comments and photos coming because it ramps up our appreciation of the wilderness. Ken S Auburn, WA

Ken, this is an outstanding image. Somebody want to reach down and hand me back my jaw??

Funny, where you wrote "I have admired many shots of the NPN group. You have the best outdoor shooters.", I completely agree, especially the PNWNP crew. This group has done more for my photo work than anything or anywhere else. I don't post because we had to move out of Oregon in 2004, so I have nothing of the NW to post. Funny, I got serious about all this in the end of 2005 and now I'm not in the PNW to shoot anything. Drives me batty! Maybe one day I can visit (or move back if possible).

OK! Nuff of that! Anyway, it's more than just getting a good shot, it's a moment of time captured to remind us the importance of being good stewards with such a beautiful land (and the PNW is the most beautiful in the country, IMO).

Thanks for posting this image, it looks to be an instant favorite. It's a joy to see. Marc termed it best I think: "This one definitely tells the story of the NW effectively."

Yep, what the others have said...this is a great first post and now you have raised the bar on yourself....I do feel that if you are posting images like this now, that you probably have more where this came from.....

this is really a beautiful atmospheric shot.....very well done in handling the exposure.....I just spent a few days up around Mount Baker and Baker has a total white top so the exposure was very tough...
