In talking with a customer at an art show today, I was told that pre-orders for a 24 MP D4 were being placed in Germany yesterday. Anyone else heard anything?

Nothing much showing up on dpreview.com, the premiere camera rumor site on the entire World Wide Web. In my experience, if there were something like that happening, there would be at least a dozen threads about it in that site's discussion forums. There are at least a couple dozen threads about the hinted-at successor to the Canon 5D, and that hasn't even been announced yet.

It's only a matter of time, though. We live in interesting times.

I've heard "D3x" at 24 MP, which goes along with Sony's 24MP sensor info that has been discussed around the web. Still speculation at this point, but leaks have become more the norm than the exception these days. Looks like the 5D Mark II from Canon will be 21MP. Can anyone say terabyte?

Yup, the Sony 24 will come out first - it was announced back in January, with some ads already hitting the streets. It will be released with at least one new Zeiss lens (16-35), and since the body will be stabilized that means that all lenses on this camera will be too. The Nikon will follow later on and will use the same sensor as the Sony. Nikon already has a couple of lenses that can handle the sensor (14-24 and 24-70) - that will be a key since you will need really good lenses to take advantage of the additional pixels. Most other lenses will effectively reduce the resolution of the sensors to much less. These higher-res sensors will have higher noise along with them - not even close to the D3 or D700 - more like the D300, but that is pretty good for normal iso ranges, and will wax the D2x on noise, which is really pretty bad with even iso 400.

Taking pre-orders for the Nikon in Germany? Just some one or some store blowing smoke. As noted above there are many rumor sites all over the net, and I always find it hilarious how much time they find to devote to it - more like a hobby for them I guess...

In the meantime I am able to put down a real deposit right now to upgrade my 39mp back to their new 60mp back that will be available in January. And for any of you who don't have one of these Phase One backs yet, you can go ahead and purchase the 60mb back now and they will give you a new 39mp back to use until it comes out - only 43 grand. Actually I may just switch to Sony - that will be one sweet system, especially at the expected price point for the body...

Most of the D3x/D4 stuff I've seen online is pure BS. Wake me up when they start talking about the D400 (or whatever they end up calling the D300 successor).
