I like the square crop on this one Kim. However it looks to me as if the focus is on that unfortunate reed running through the front of the bird. It's a shame because otherwise it's a nive environmental shot.

Thanks Robert, I agree - the reed does spoil the picture, I spent ages hoping they would climb up the reeds - but no - I just couold not get a decent clear shot this year!! I did consider cloning the reed but decided it just would not work.

I think the bird is a little too big in the frame. I presume this is from a horizontal shot. In my opinion the head needs to be just right of a centre line down the middle. A smaller bird size would increase the apparent sharpness too. The reed in front does not bother me too much . Its often the way things are -especially with these guys.
I'd like to see the full frame on this one.
Cheers

Hi Kim,
These guys can be really frustrating giving lots of opportunities, but not many in uncluttered surroundings. The reed stalk is a frustration, but the shot will be nice one with some more room in front of the bird.

Hi John, - have managed to find the uncropped version and attach it. Neither pic is very good but I agree - I had probably cropped too much.

Hi Kim
That to me is much better ! The whole thing balances well and the front dead stem doesn't bother me at all.The head could probably stand a bit of sharpening.
Nice one.
