I am sure that this question is asked each year, but when does the Elk migration start at RMNP and when is a good time to visit?

Thanks.

Elk "migration"? Hey man, the elk are always in the park. They're also in the McDonalds parking lot in Estes, and anywhere else you happen to go. Just drive to the park and you'll see them. Try Horseshoe Park and Moraine Park in the morning or evening.

I had to laugh at Todd's comment!. The Elk rutting usually happens end of September/start of October in the Park, and as Todd said best locations are the meadows - and even the Estes Park GC!. I think the Elk do "migrate" to lower elevations in the winter.

Just like Todd said, everywhere. I saw a 6 point bull with a small harem just across the street from the Stanley Hotel, in that small greenbelt area. There was another 6 point with his small harem just inside the Sheep's Lake entrance. The bulls looked calm right now, but when another 6 point was crossing the road just about 2 miles up from Many Parks curve, I saw several people being really stupid, and getting way too close to a 1000 pound animal who is starting to get very edgy.

The bulls were bugling last Wed already and the action should continue til the 2nd week of October. The heaviest action is usually the 3rd and 4th weeks of Sept. There are herds currently in Moraine Park and Beaver Meadows as well as up on Trail Ridge Road.
