Haaa! This is fantastic news to me, who has been sitting patiently with my little Sony Alpha 100 while Canon and Nikon came out with one killer DSLR after another. I will almost certainly be buying this bad boy, though I do want to wait for some more in-depth reviews to come out. Now if I could just afford the new Zeiss lenses, which seem to start at $1500 or so. Grrr.

Hopefully that will result in a better spec or price level for the anticipated 5D replacement

I doubt that.
The 5D replacement is within days of launch, so all is set in stone.
Sony is not enough of a major player to instigate competitive pricing with the 'big boys'.

I'd be all about the A900 if I hadn't sold off my full frame lenses to finance my A700 purchase. :frown:

But it looks like a beast that I may have to find a way to finance. Anyone know someone looking for..."companionship"?

Like John said, the 5D successor's specs are set in stone. My guess is that Canon was waiting for this announcement in order to determine its pricing. Hopefully, we'll know by next week.

The new Sony definitely looks pretty good, but those lens prices would make me cringe. One of Canon's stronger suits IMO are the number of relatively inexpensive "sleeper" lenses they have in their lineup that have very good IQ.

Who wants to bet that Nikon comes out with an almost exactly spec'd camera very soon??? Don't they share the same sensors?

I'm keeping my fingers crossed! I sold all of my LF gear in anticipation of a ~24MP Nikon coming soon...

Exactly Jack. This is one awesome offering, at the price point. And that Zeiss glass. Mmmmm. And with Nikon unveiling incredible lenses ... and micro 4/3's coming soon ... etc ... it's a great year to be shopping for a camera system - no matter what brand you prefer.

Hopefully, Canon also jumps out with some competitive wide angle glass very soon - along with the second coming of the 5d.
