The Polish community in Portland is organizing an anual festival in the last weekend of September: http://www.portlandpolonia.org/festival/
It is probably the biggest and best organized ethnic festival in the Northwest. In my opinion it's even better that Octoberfest, which turned into a regular Saturday Market rather than an authentic ethnic festival.
I am one of the volunteers on that festival and we came up to a rather bold idea: a photo contest related to the festival. The photographers would have to take pictures during the festival and the theme of the contest would be "The Faces of Poland".
The Polish community would fund a prize and would benefit from using the photograph for its own marketing.
The problem is that I have no idea what would be involved in organizing such a contest. There is very little time, and there are many questions:
1. How and where to advertize the contest? As I said - very little time.
2. What is the usual prize for such contests?
3. Is there any legal stuff that needs to be solved? Like being exposed to a suit when a photographer submits a photo without somebody's release agreement.
Does anybody have any experience in this kind of stuff? If yes, do you have any words of wisdom or advice? Would anybody be interested in volunteering for a judge? etc, etc..
Please provide any comments or advice. I really have no experience in this at all.
Thank you,
Cezar

Cezar, pulling off a successful contest such as this certainly sounds like a big task. I have no idea how to go about it, but you might try contacting Richard McEnery (info@icpawards.com) who directs the International Conservation Photography Awards up in Seattle or any other photo contest organizer. Good luck on your ambitious project!
