I'll be up there this weekend and would like to know if anyone has some spots they recommend for sunset or sunrise. I don't mind any fog just don't want to drive very far from Foster City where I'm staying if I don't have to. Maybe something a little further Sunday. Some redwoods in the mid afternoon I'm thinking. Thanks for any suggestions.
I've been to Big Basin and was pretty impressed.

You might try somewhere on Skyline Drive / Hwy 35. It is on the ridge that overlooks the inner bay. Crystal Springs Reservoir is in that area as well and has a popular hiking trail. Palo Alto Baylands for birds. Treasure Island for SF skyline photos, but that will probably be a 20+ mile drive.

Thanks Richard, Treasure Island sounds good. I don't want to drive more than an hour while in town but I leave Sunday and head south so anything not too far out of the way would do then.

Cool. Well for the Golden Gate, you can get direct lighting at sunrise from Fort Point. If you're going to treasure island, I'd recommend a telephoto lens if you want tight shots of the skyline. 70-200 or so. Within the city, the best skyline shots are from Pier 7 but you'd have to get there real early because you'd have to walk to get to the Pier. Parking is pretty expensive as well along Embarcadero.
Good luck.

Steve, I'd second Richard's suggestion of Skyline Drive (south of 92). The drive itself is extremely nice, and its relatively close to Foster City and far away from the hustle and bustle of the city (unless that is what you are looking for). My favorite locations for sunrise/sunset are Russian Ridge and Windy Hill, which are a bit further south. If you are looking for redwoods look into Purisima Creek Redwoods OSP (http://www.bahiker.com/southbayhikes/purisima.html).
Weatherwise, the fog has been in coming in all week. Here further south on the peninsula it has burned off by 9 or 10am. If the weather pattern stays the same expect morning fog that'll burn off by mid-day, depending upon where you area: the closer you get to the city the less of a chance you have of it burning off

Thanks Richard and Greg. Purisma Redwoods sound perfectly convenient as it's on the back home. I wouldn't be so picky but I've got my girlfriend w/ me so I've got to do some enterntaining too. I think she'll really like the trip even if she's not a photographer.
