Hi all,
I just wanted to say hello. My family and I have recently moved from CO to Monterey, CA. I am looking forward to shooting seascapes and the Sierras. Of course I will miss the Rockies especially Fall colors around this time of the year. But we are very glad to be near the coast again.
Anyway here are a few recent shots taken around the Monterey area. I am just starting to a get feel for things over here and still figuring out the better spots for shooting.

Hi Derek,
Welcome to CANP. It is very nice to have you here among us. Monterey is a wonderful area. You will also find lots of good locatons for shooting seascapes around Big Sur (which is just a little south of there).
Personally, I think fall colors are over-rated. Who needs that when we have the Pacific coast right in our back yard. Ouch, I suppose I shouldn't have said that - now the Eastern Sierra fans will be all over me.
I loved your recent photos from the Monterey area. Specially the one with the lone flying gull. Look forward to seeing more of your work here.
Regards.

Derek,
Welcome back to the left coast. Monterey is not such a bad area to settle in.... :-)
Nice set of images and we look forward to your participation.
Don't worry Anil, I won't get on your case. I'll just dare you to come meet with us in Lee Vining. :-)
Welcome Derek.

lol, well I thought fall was overrated too until I saw Zion NP and Kentucky / Indiana in the fall season. Those places are on another level compared to the Sierra fall. Just like Monterey is on another level as far as the coast goes. Great photo ops.

Thanks guys! Actually one of the attractions to the West Coast is also the Sierras for me. When we lived in SoCal previously our two favorite spots to vacation where Mammoth and Monterey/Santa Cruz.
And I do remember visiting the Bishop area during Fall colors and seeing a beautiful Aspen display somewhere up there. Although I don't recall the road. I do know that Galen Rowell used to shoot over that way. Man, that is getting the juices flowing. Maybe I'll have to make a run out there this year after all. Hmm....
Yeah, fall can be a very magical time, almost surreal when you are in the midst of quaking aspens sparkling in the sun with snow capped mtns. close by. It is kind of like the Super Bowl of photography season in CO. Here are a few of mine from Aspen and the San Juans:
Hello Derek, very nice to meet you on line here and hope we can meet up in the field some day too. If you can make it to Lee Vining around the 1st of October, sounds like we have a pretty good sized group headed over there this season again too.

Hey Derek,
Welcome to CANP and back to California. You get beaches and Mountains now or even more than that. My parents just moved from the Springs to Sparks, NV. So I'll miss the Rockies too.
In that trip report Carol Leigh is the one person w/ my favorite hot sheet on the fall color reports in the Eastern Sierra. I sure hope to get up there when the rest of the group here heads up.
I like the first shot of the blowhole in that series but even more the last shot of China Cove w/ the moon in it. Beautiful.
I'll be photographing somewhere north of you on Sunday afternoon. Don't know where yet until I see the conditions.

Derek...
Welcome! As someone who also loves the mountains of Colorado, I find a quick trip to the Rockies to catch up with the gang from CNP quenches my thirst. Living here in the Sierra gives me the opportunity to catch fall colors locally - head east to Colorado - southeast for Red Rock Country - west for the coast - south for Yosemite / Kings Canyon / Sequoia - north for the Cascades - northeast for Yellowstone and the Tetons, etc, etc. It's the best of all worlds.
Take care and if you head up to the Lake Tahoe area, drop me a note...

Thanks for the warm welcome guys! Just looking at everyone's location in this thread really showcases the diverse landscape CA has to offer.
Although I just started a new job in Monterey I'll look into getting a little time off toward the beginning of Oct. Jeesh thats only a few weeks away! I don't know if I can do it this year. But I really like the idea of experiencing Fall colors in the Sierras.
Harley's cover shot of Fall at Rush Creek is killer BTW

Welcome back to Kali land, Derek. CA might not quite rival CO for aspens, but with the coast, the desert, the Sierra, the north coast, etc, etc. it has more diversity and image opportunities than just about anywhere. Looking forward to seeing more of your posts.

Welcome Derek. I've lived in the Monterey almost my whole life, send me an email, maybe we can hook up sometime.

Cool Reno,
When I lived in Colorado Springs it was always good to know other RMNP'ers in the area. Sometimes we would carpool into the Rockies for Summer wildflowers or Fall color expeditions.
The cool thing about the Rockies is you can tent/car camp just about anywhere. Even at iconic spots like the Maroon Bells there is an overnight parking lot in walking distance to the lake. During Fall colors we had at least 20 RMNP'ers car camping prior to the big event. And it was too cold to tent camp for most folks - 15 degrees, windy and snowing.
I don't think you can do that kind of thing as much in CA especially at places like Yosemite. There are just too many visitors. But maybe on the eastern slopes of the Sierras it it is easier to camp out.

Sweet images! I particularly enjoyed the second link (lone gull) and the last (CO fall colors). Can't wait to see what else you capture now that you're local. Good stuff!
