I signed up for the Zeiss newsletter after I saw Todd's post about the ZE mount. In their latest email release, they are confirming the ZE is for the EF mount. BUT - the first two lenses that are available are a 50mm and an 85mm. I guess I was hoping to see a wide angle come out first rather than an 85mm... All in good time I guess!
"The first lenses to be available will be the Planar T* 1,4/50 ZE and the Planar T* 1,4/85 ZE in the last quarter of this year. Further focal lengths will be added to the line within the next few months."

I'd really like to see a wide angle tele and a mid-length tele, i.e. the 16-35mm and 24-105mm lens. Really cool news!

I saw something online yesterday that said they'll be releasing a 21mm f2.8 in '09. No word on the 18mm f3.5, but I'd sure jump on that 21mm, even though it'll likely be on the pricey side. (A given w/ Zeiss, of course!)

Good news all around. If nothing else, it's more fuel to the fire (started by Nikon's 14-24mm) under Canon's rear.

I don't really get the strategy in that they are first releasing lenses in focal lengths that Canon actually has covered pretty well. Why not start with focal lengths where Canon is weakest (like anything wide)? I'm not a big prime user to begin with, but I may give some serious thought to the 21/2.8 if Canon has nothing else on the horizon on the wide end.

FYI, those two new Zeiss lens for Canon are manual focus.
Guy,
21mm is supposedly the best WA lens. I had the opportunity to use it and have the raw file. I may visit fotokina this year if time permits and see if the new one is available to test, handle.
other than that 50,85mm will have that zeiss tag many people crave for. lust lust and more equipment lust.
