Muir Beach--Sunset
Last night I got the chance to shoot the sunset with Lon, Chris, Edward and Dietrich. The sunset was a bust, and no clouds were in the sky. I realized that the best light was about 20 mins before sunset, as the suns golden color was shining on the sea stack and the pink gradient was in the sky. Some clouds/better light would have made this shot really sing.

Any comments and suggestions welcome.

Thanks,

Canon 30D, 10-22mm, 2-stop GND

Benjamin, this one is perfect as a vertical composition. Also, the minimal sky used in the scene helps with the overall lack of clouds and extremely colorful light. Looks like a heck of a place to follow up on with more captures IMO.

Ben,

Excellent! The composition is perfect as is the timing of the last light on the sea stack. And what also makes this a strong and beautiful image is the wet rocks and surf connecting the foreground to the background. I know the sky was what it was, but I wouldn't have any issues if you tried to bring up the pink just a little bit... :-)

Glad you came home with this and hope you got a few more. Great meeting you. Hope to do this again.

Just seeing this is giving me the itch to get back down to the beach soon. Composition, colors and exposure look good to me... yeah clouds would be nice, but what can you do. As soon as the clouds return, I'll be back at the beach experimenting with shots like this. Nice work!

wonderful image Benjamin. very beautifully composed. I have shot this place several times but didn't quiet get this angle. I like how the water rests on the land and has all the bit of calmness to it. very nice work.

Benjamin,

Very nice image. I like the flow, and composition. I agree a different day with more drama in the sky will enhance it, but I think you did the best with what was offered.

Nice meeting you as well, and keep me posted if you want to meet anytime to shoot around.

Thanks, Edward. I definitely don't like the light that this image has. The fg is way too flat for this image to be worthy of printing. I know where this location is though, so I will keep an eye on the tide charts and my schedule to see if I can make it back for another shoot. I will be in Santa Cruz for the next 9 months, so I am going to try and do some hiking, exploring, and photographing throughout Big Sur. I will let you know when I decide to take the weekend off to do some camping.

Benjamin, I will be actually camping with family in Big Sur the weekend of October 17th to 19th. I will be photographing around there.

BTW, I also posted a couple of shots from that day on the original thread for the CANP meetup.

Thanks for the info Edward, I will keep that in mind and see if I can get off work. I will just sleep in my car somewhere, so I will get your # and we can shoot sunrise/sunset.

Hey,
Considering what we had to work with, I am pretty impressed with this one. It is quite appealling to me from a compositional stand point, and has a lot of aesthetic value even without the dramatic light. Nice hanging with you at this spot. I think it is worth a return trip when the sky has something more to offer.
