I'm looking for some good local feedback. I'm going to be in Anaheim for a medical conference October 22-25. I want to dovetail 7-10 days of vacation on either end of the event. We plan on going as far north as Yosemite so wonder what we might expect either there or in the eastern Sierras. Any advice you can provide will be much appreciated.>=))>

Bill,

Your best bet for fall color in the Sierra that late in October will be Yosemite, Sequoia and KIngs Canyon, along with the Sierra Foothills on the west side of the range. You might find some linerging color on the East Side at the lower elevations in the southern part of the range and also in Owens Valley.

Also, don't overlook the San Gabriel and San Bernardino mountains in Southern CA. They are truly beautiful. Perhaps MIchael Gordon, or one of the other SoCal residents, could give you some info on fall color there.

Hey Bill,

You said "on either end of the event." If it were me the decision would be very easy considering your fixed event 10/22-25.

Before the event: Eastern Sierra/Fall color.
After the event: Yosemite coming up the central valley

Late in the season, odds are very high that you can't do both. For a number of years I centered my trips around the Columbus Day holiday which is around the 13th and I never had trouble finding color. In general, the first 2 weeks of October is a sure bet for something. It is possible coming up the eastern side to get to Yosemite via Tioga Pass (120) late in the year - but it's a crap shoot. Last year, we had a snow storm pass thru around 10/5-6 and the pass was closed for a 1/2 day or so, but it reopened and stayed open for a couple more weeks. It's different every year.

If you've never been to either and once you've decided which way to go, feel free to post another message or send anyone of us a note.

Have fun!
Lon

I love Yosemite toward the end of October. It is generally quite quiet and peaceful. The oaks are usually at prime then and you might catch the dogwoods turning too. The oak colors are typically not as vibrant as the aspens in the eastern Sierra earlier in the month, but it is a great place for all kinds of photography. It is a magical place.
