The week of 5 October I will be traveling the Maine coast enroute to South West Harbor. I will be traveling Route 1 when possible. I am interested in picturesque villages, and lighthouses; also, state parks and nature preserves.

Thank you for your input.

Pemaquid Lighthouse is a good one. Cape Neddick is really scenic with it's lighthouse.
Marshall point is pretty and has a cute lighthouse.

The villages of Rockport and Camden are pretty.

Doris,

I have made a couple trips up and down the Maine coast in search of lighthouses. If you visit my website www.mikedirenzophotography.com you can view some of these great little lighthouses. As mentioned by Chris, Cape Neddick (also known a Nubble Lighthouse) is located in York Beach, Pemaquid is also very scenic and that is near Bristol, Portland Head lighthouse in the capitol city is very scenic, Marshall Point is near Port Clyde, two of the nicest lights are Bass Harbor which is on Mount Desert Island in Acadia National Park (sunsets are great) and my favorite is West Quoddy which is way up north in Lubec, beautiful white with red stripes and a neat leading line fence (the furthest Eastern point in the USA). Just over the border on Campobello Island New Brunswick are two good ones that are only miles apart, Mulholland Light which is right over the bridge and East Quoddy which is gorgeous (white with a huge red cross of St. George painted across it). Bring your passport for traveling back and forth across the border. All of these lights are situated on rocky vantage points. You can get specific directions at the New England Lighthouses website but checkout my website for some quick views of all mentioned lights. Enjoy your trip!!!

I just finished this trip as part of a two week loop through New England. I found the book The Photographers Guide to The Maine Cost to be very useful. He gave many suggestions for lighthouses, parks, beaches, mountains, villages, etc. along with sample photos and directions on how to find the places. If you have time you might want to pick up a copy.

I think Camden was my faorite harbor. Stonington south of Mt. Desert Island is also a nice place for shots of a typical working harbor.

If you have time, go to Monhegan Island. Google it for more info
Other places are already mentioned by others - also the book "The Photographers Guide to The Maine Cost" has tons of good info.
