My son is in need of a desktop PC, so i am giving him my Dell PC. I would like to know if someone could spec out requirements for a new PC for digital imaging (Motherboard, Graphics card,) or maybe someone can guide me to a site with ready made PCs with excellent specs.I am willing to spend anywhere between 800 to 1000 STG.

Many thanks

Hi

I am about to upgrade my own machine, giving this machine + 19" flat screen monitor away, not worth the hassle of trying to sell it.

So I asked my son to spec out a new machine, which will give me options, not only for now, but for the next couple of years.

The following is what he came up with.

As an aside, I also had a number of other IT specialists look at his spec.and the only comments I got back was concerning the sound card. It is the top of the range and is really aimed at those who play games on line, or want the "bees knees" in quality for their music. I must admit that I do like listening to my music when I'm on the computer.

I haven't cost'd it out, mainly because there are a few extra costs/savings, involved for me. For example: two extra 1 TB hard disks, having my current hard disk mirrored onto the new “C” disk etc.. I don’t need a new k’board/mouse and I already have a 21” flat screen and another 19”making up my dual screen set up. So a true costing wouldn’t be very realistic.

NEW MACHINE SPEC.

OS:- Windows Vista Ultimate 64bit

Case:- A+ Case Twin Engine / XCLIO A380

Mobo:- ASUS P5Q Deluxe

Processor:- Q6600 (There are better quads out there but atm the price difference doesn’t warrant them, this is a solid choice for performance/price)

PSU:- Corsair TX 750w (CMPSU -750TXUK)

RAM:- Corsair 2gb DDR2 800mhz PC2-6400 XMS2 (x4 sticks making 8gb of

RAM:- 8gb maybe more than you’ll need but I doubt you’ll ever need more, and wiith Vista you can never have too much ram hehe.)

HD:- Samsung Spinpoint F1 HD103UJ 1TB SATA II 32mb cache

GFX:- Zotac 8800GT AMP edition (or 8800GT equivalent),

S’card :- Creative 70SB046A02007 - XFI Xtreme

Try T5 computers in Feltham Middlesex, 020 88906161, they will build one for you and give you a very fair price, if you don’t want to build it yourself. I’m sure they will also spec out a machine for you if you wish. Ask for David Phipps he really knows his stuff. They have a web site but it is very basic here is the link: http://www.t5computers.co.uk/

Hope this helps. Anyway at least this is a starting point.

I'm doing al my Photoshop work in a virtual machine (using VMWare Server (free software)). This virtual machine has1.5 Gb memory, two harddisks 15/20 Gb 1 processor (2,8 Ghz).
At the moment this works fine for me. All my photo's are located on my physical server where also my virtual machine is running on.

Besides this I do have tow USB disks for backups. One of them is not in my house but with my parents-in-law. I change these disk once a month.
Hope this is useful for you.
