Hey folks,
Just wanted to drop a note that for anyone who is around this coming weekend, I would like to organize a lunch get-together at Nicely's in Lee Vining on Saturday, the 4th at 11:30. And for those also interested, we could meet for a sunrise Sunday morning at the Old Marina.
For those that I know will be in the area, I already have your cell numbers, and you have mine. If there is anyone else who would like to join us, please let me know. You can post here, but drop me an email as well to exchange cell numbers.
If Nicely's is too crowded, we can opt for the Mobile station at the intersection of 395 and 120. they've got picnic tables.
The "Old Marina" is NOT South Tufa, but it is an area that is a good location looking towards the sunrise. There is the main parking area right off 395 just north of the Visitors center near the bottom of the steep grade as you head north. There are a couple of locations to shoot from and the one I'm thinking of requires driving a short distance (.1 mile?) from the parking area and then about a 10min walk to the shore. Be prepared for mucky and COLD. I usually wear my Sorel's around the lake, rubber mud boots work too.
Anyway, here's a link with 2 Google Earth kmz files. Save, then unzip the file and double click on either of the files. If you have GE installed, it will bring up the locations. GE is so cool.
Please let me know if you think you'll make it for lunch. And NO, I'm not treating! :-)
Color update: I received a call from Paul B yesterday and he told me that everything is still very green! Hopefully the weather front coming thru will get things in to high gear for this weekend. If things are still pretty green, I'll personally probably head up the higher locations like Dunderberg and Green Lakes roads and Upper Summer meadows. The Parker bench might be an option as well.
Anyway, feel free to drop me a note if you want to meet.
Thanks,
Lon
update: oops - I first said the 5th, it's now changed to the correct date, Saturday, the 5th. Thanks Preston.
UPDATE 10/1:
OK, OK, OK, OK. Venue change to Whoa Nellie Deli - the Mobile Station at the intersection of 395/120. 11:30 AM Saturday, 10/4.
I guess I had been going to Nicely's long before that gas station opened and it's an old habit/tradition. What, nobody eats biscuits and gravy anymore??? Chicken Fried steak?? :-)
"oops-I first said the 5th, it's now changed to the correct date, Saturday, the 5th."
"It's Saturday, the 5th, FIFTH (not vodka) or September cinco... "
Lon, I am going to recommend you as the manager emeritus of the department of redundancy department.
This still doesn't alter the fact that Saturday is October 4th The day following the 4th is the 5th, and that falls on Sunday.
See you in a few days,
-P

Preston,
I think what really happened is that you, as the moderator, edited my statements!!
No one, I mean no one, could have been that absent minded? And I've been off the sauce for a month now! Holy crap.
I think I need some fresh, mountain air.

Lon, for the last couple of weeks I have been building up the courage to accept your challenge to show up at Lee Vining. But now with all this, I am not so sure. It might just be safer for me to stay away.

You guys are funny! I'm going to try to make it up there by that time. Let you know for sure when I find out where I'm staying.

My strategy all along was to confuse. I see it's working.

I am confused. What day are we meeting for lunch? Where is Lee Vining?

My vote is definitely for the Whoa Nellie Deli, in the Mobil station. I can't eat anything at Nicely's, the food is so bad.
Saturday it is, whatever the date!

I would second the vote for the Whoa Nellie Deli. The food is excellent and they have a nice big patio.

I was slowly getting my gear together to make a trip up to the Eastern Sierra's for this weekend, but due to a recent family matter I will unfortunately not be able to make it. Other than shooting some wonderful fall colors, I was really looking forward to the possibility of meeting up with some of the fellow CANP members during this trip. May you all have safe travels and I look forward to seeing the undoubtedly beautiful images you'll all be bringing back.

P.S. Thank you moderators for making my image "purple majesties" this months cover image and all of you who have taken the time to comment on it.
Check out the changes in the original post above regarding the lunch location, now the Whoa Nellie deli at the Mobil station on the Tioga Rd. and check out the weather forecast link posted there. Bring your chains and long johns.

I tried the fish tacos at Whoa Nellie's today and they're pretty good. The mango taco version was kinda unusual though. Nicelys is good for breakfast.
