I hope some of you Kansas or Missouri folks can help make some suggestions. I have to be in KC on business for a 7 day class which will mean staying over on a weekend in late October. Looking for suggestions within 2-3 hours of the KC metro area for good landscapes that I could day trip and see. Any state parks, NWR, scenic drives etc?
Thanks for any info.

The Konza Prairie near Manhattan, KS would be a 2 hour drive for you. I'm sure Wayne can suggest closer locals though :).

Konza looks very interesting with the tall grass prairie. Just the type of location I was hoping for. I think it would be a good location for one of my days-so the little apple it is.
Thanks, Rob.
Now to see if there might be anything for my other day.......

Darren,
To add a little "intimate" landscape photography to your agenda you may want to visit the Streamway Parks trail on Mill Creek. The trail is a 17 mile continously paved path in Johnson County, KS (metro KC) running from the Kansas River on the north to Olathe on the south. There are many trailheads along the route but some of my favorite scenery is accessed off of 83rd Street & Woodland Road (trailhead just south of W 91 Street).
Let me know if you need specific directions. Heck, I may even be able to hook up with you one night. Late October may lend itself nicely to fall colors along the stream. Enjoy your stay!

Darren, I'll throw in the option of a couple of area lakes just west of KC. Clinton Lake at Lawrence and Lake Perry just off of US 24 west of Lawrence between Perry and Topeka have always provided many hours of exploring and photo opportunities for me. Lots of parks and trails around both. You may be hitting this area in some prime fall color. Have Fun.

Darren,
I would second Rob's sugestion of Konza Prairie. I would also include the Tallgrass National Preserve http://www.nps.gov/archive/tapr/home.htm or Chase County Lake both near Strong City/Cottonwood Falls area.
I think any where in the tall grass is going to be great this year because of all the rain we have had and late Oct. might be about perfect. I plan on being out about every weekend myself.
