Been trying for 3 years to shoot Crystal Mill with good color... each year a different problem (snow once, strong winds once, now about 5 - 7 days to early along with cloudy skies) have resulted in me yet to get the blue sky, yellow aspen image I desire.
However, Ive been wanting to attempt a light paint of the Mill as well, so packed in gear to do both (parked at lake and hiked the 3.5 miles in).
Generally pleased with result, though of course, can always improve, but happy with this 1st attempt.
Taken approximately 30 minutes after sunset, iso 1000, f16, 30 seconds.

Nice job, Tim.
What did you use to "paint" the mill... a flash, or a spotlight?
Hey Tim,
Great work. You really worked for this one. I bet you took the shot this past Saturday evening. I was parked at Lizard Lake in the dark blue Wrangler shooting reflections. Bet that was you with your wife, no?

Very cool, Tim. It's refreshing to see such a unique image from such an over-photographed spot!

You did a great job here!
What kind of light did you use? Did you 'paint' the building from where the camera is set up?

2 million candlepower spot light was used (per Dave Black's method), painting the subject. Had a vertical I was going to post, a bit tighter and removes some of dead space on left and right, but my membership has expired here and be a couple of days until I get renewed. Hiked in around 2pm (alone though) and hung out for long while, had hoped for blue sky aspen shots. Aspen was very disappointing at the mill Another couple of photographers were there in there, perhaps that is who Jim saw.
