North Lake and Fall Color

Well here's a very unoriginal image from North Lake that I took yesterday morning. I'm sure no one's ever seen it from this angle! But I wanted this one in my portfolio so I got to the lake at 6am with no one around until about 15 minutes later. Still there weren't too many people. This weekend from this same spot I suspect there might be more photographers here than fisherman!

I was hoping to get some reds/pinks in the clouds at first light, but too many clouds to the east. I think I prefer this image over first light type of image any how. the soft direct lighting really makes the colors pop.

Sounds like we might be getting a "winter" storm to the high country this weekend. We'll see what comes of it!

I also shot this one at the same time, which of the two do you prefer if any?

Thanks for looking and I hope you have a good fall color excursion!

Wow man. I like this a lot.

Here is tonight's version straight out of camera. I'm on an old laptop so I guess I'll find out what it looks like at the end of the week.

HaHa, great comp RW! So that's what it looked like tonight? I wanted to go out tonight and shoot the whites, but had firewood to stack. Are you in bishop for the next couple days? If so wanna meet up in the buttermilk's? Let me know. I was thinking of scoping a couple things out after work tomorrow.

Yeah man. Give me a call around noontime tomorrow as I should be in town where I have cell reception. I'm thinking sunrise at Sabrina since I can never seem to get good light up there. Sunset is an open book for me so buttermilks works. I don't have 4WD btw.

Cory, Very nice, you can probably get a nice pano out of that one too.
The 2nd is a little brighter but I can't decide which I prefer so I like them both.

Richard, Wow that should process very nicely. It's a little on the blue side, that's what my laptop does too.

Cory,

Thanks for the teasers! Actually, looks like the storm coming Friday might just make North Lake history..

I like both images very much. The first is a grand landscape and I really like the second one for it's more refined comp, reflection and I really like that there are some ripples in the water to break up the reflection. Very cool.

Hope to see you on Saturday.

thanks steve & lon for looking and commenting. I like both as well but probably the one with the grass slightly more.
I'm planning on attending on sat if road conditions aren't bad. if they are I'll just stay down here.

Quite a number of ways to shoot that from various spots along the east shores. I tend to work the shores northeast than this south side and don't include that shadowed slopes at left. Although I have several over a number of years, I never have managed a decent pic with some clouds in the skies at left for better balance. Best pics so far are all blue sky like one on link at bottom. There have been some decent clouds at times but on those days the breeze wasn't calm enough. During at least half my mornings there over the years, the slight breeze has been too much for my liking. Generally I simply do not usually like lake reflection images that are not quite calm especially with icon shots like this. Another usual issue is good color in the background clone aspens. Only once every few years does a genuinely good orange red come out in the trees about the background ravine. Best conditions are when there is more a mix of yellow, green, orange, and rusty red that is most likely during El Nino years when the whole slope still has some seeps into late season.

Cory,

I like the second one from the link better. It a more common angle though. To answer your question about my image. I'm just trying to make a photo that moves you. I wasn't thinking about the meaning of light and dark.

This photograph gives the impression that the location was very (very) still and quiet. I love that feeling.
