Short Eared Owl Hunting
1D2n 600mm f4 is, x1.4tc, 1.250s, f7.1, iso 400

I haven't managed out very much recently, but I have been watching a few of these on occasions. I had hoped to get a front lit shot, but no luck. As it happens, I quite like the backlighting. I will be re-visiting!

Hi Ian,

This is very nice. Love the FG showing a bit of habitat and the SEO's position in the frame is spot on. Colours and sharpness are excellent. I have a winter project for SEO, if I can get shots like this I will be very very happy!!

Good work

Regards

Rob

It's a wonderful image, where everything comes together. Just one question - the eyes seem overly orange for a SEO - did you do something here, or is this owl just impersonating a LEO ? :toast: :toast:

"the eyes seem overly orange for a SEO - did you do something here,"

The whole image had a little saturation added, perhaps 8-10 units, but nothing else to the eyes. I've looked at a few other images and some eyes do seem a richer colour than others. Here's another from a few days ago and the eyes are definitely more yellow. Maybe just the lighting conditions?

Very nice indeed Ian.
I spent many hours photographing these at the nest  in black and white days !
Lovely shot.
Cheers

Original post is great. The backlighting works a treat especially as you still have plenty of detail in the front of the bird. Personally I'd prefer a GOOD backlit shot over a front lit one every time and this is certainly a good one.

Hi Ian,

I don't think there's something wrong with the picture. Nice backlight and the face is also visisble and not to dark IMO.

Beautiful images, like them very much - particularly in the natural setting.

I'd be very happy just to see one of these let alone photograph one - perfectly captured :toast: :toast:
