Need help on this one. I'm one of the kooks that just sold his 5D and is waiting for the new 5D MKII. The new model supports UDMA CF Cards.
Having said that, the upgraded line of SanDisk Extreme IV cards now support UDMA. They have the new black and silver label and UDMA stamp to set them apart from the original Extreme IVs. These cards do 45mb/sec according to SanDisk. Current price for the 8GB UDMA version is well over $200. (ouch)
BUT, SanDisk also makes a special line of cards called the Ducati Edition, which is not UDMA. That CF card also does 45mb/sec. I verified this in several places. The current price for 8GB with rebate is $44.95! (ends October 11th I think)
So, given that the two cards are both 45mb/sec, is the UDMA necessary in this case? What does it gain?
I saw that Vincent Laforet (who did that incredible video for Canon with the new 5D) used Lexar UDMA cards when shooting that video. Those are also 45mb/sec.
So how do the Ducati edition cards do 45mb/sec if non-UDMA, and will they perform to the same speed as the new UDMA line?
My only guess on this is that since the UDMA technology does more of the grunt work of transferring the data, thereby relieving the burden on the camera/computer, that you would actually get to use all 45mb/sec, whereas the Ducati's are capable but will that speed be realized.
Errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr, where are you finding these for $44.95?
Serious, I want to know.

WHOA. It's adorama.com, but I just went there and they're GONE. They were just there last night! I wonder if that's the end of the stock and then that's it. I then saw they had 4GB Ducati's for $24.95 after rebate if you buy one. I just ordered 3 of them, because the rebate increases if you buy 3. Man, we really need to stay on top of the game.
JSYK, the 4GB are $69.99, and if you buy 3 for $209.97, you get a $160 rebate. Not bad, that ends up being $50 for 12GB of fast CF... not too shabby. I wanted to wait for someone to answer who knew more about UDMA, but at this price, I went for it. Free shipping too!

FWIW, I just received the 4GB Ducati CF cards today (I ordered from Adorama), and lo and behold, the box says "UDMA Enabled"! What an unexpected blessing. The product descriptions on several websites never mentioned this.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance!
