Encountered a number of Elk roaming with five stags this one knew I was in close proximity but posed for a few minutes. I was trying to capture clear definition of his head and expression.

Hi Barry,
What you needed was a blip of fill flash!! Nice position in the frame and an impressive looking beast.

Is that in the PP or should I have increased the ISO?

Good positioning , and could do with the shadows lifting a bit with fill light or whatever it is in your software.

You might be able to 'lighten' the dark side of his head in PS by selecting it and using the shadow/hightlight tool.
Nice shot though.

Hi Barry,
Ideally fill flash wants to be done when taking the image with a flash unit. You will have to experiment and see what settings are best for the flash on the day, as light etc will change each time. As said above it can be done in PP, but just look at my "down the hatch" post to see how naff it can look!

Hi Barry,
Great shot and well composed. I agree a bit of fill flash at the time would have improved an already nice image.

Agree with the above comments, but beautifully positioned in the frame.A nice catch.
A good alert expression but it's a shame the head is in shadow. As Paula mentions, a little careful use of the shadow/highlight tool, or similar, may help reveal a little more detail.
