Sleepover
I had been trying to take pictures of the New England Asters booming in the prairie but the wind has been blowing every day for the past week. I noticed the wind was calm this morning and that we had a very hard frost (our first). I went out to take pictures of the Asters but found that they were closed. Then I noticed there were about a half dozen bees on the plant. Obviously they weren’t moving much so I decided to take some photos.

I went back later in the morning after the sun came out and found the bees moving around. It was fascinating watching them open the flowers so they could get at the pollen.

Because the wind was relatively calm and the bees were not moving I was able to take several shots combine them using with Helicon Focus.

Nice discovery, Phil! I've seen the asters around here and want to photograph them, but I had no idea that there might be a bee holed up in there, seeking a bit of warmth...

Good timing, Phil. Looks like the bees were holed up inside trying to stay warm.

Nice shot, I like the comp and the color.

The white balance feels a bit cyan for my tastes, but I realize that it's probably true to the time of day. Compositionally, I think it's very good. The dew covered bee is fantastic. Great capture.
