While coming back from a hike with my son at RMNP Thursday, came across this male chasing a female around Poudre Lake on Trail Ridge road just prior to "official sunset" but after the sun sank behind the nearby mountains. It was quite the scene to watch, watching the pair move along the entire far shore of the small lake, with the female eventually swimming across the lake as the male continued walking around the edge.
Despite the poor light, grabbed the D2x and my 300 f4, pushed iso to 800, about the best I could do with that camera, and shot some propped hand held shots as best I could at only 1/125. Although the image could be far better techincally, and noise is apparant, still a fun shot and great reminder of the experience (call these snaphots).
What the image cannot capture is the experience of my first moose sighting in the wild. In my 51 years, this was the 1st time Ive seen a moose in the wild so was quite a thrill, and to see the moose pass so close was an even better treat. The female passed even closer!
By watching the movements of the pair, we anticipated they would pass near the parking area on the NW corner of the lake, so positioned the car there, and yes, we (and everyone else) were safely in the vehicle as they passed, though neither the male nor female seem to have any of the spectators on their minds, evidently they were preoccupied with something else

Nice shot Tim and as moose go he's actualy quite handsome! Your story reminds me of my first moose experience, quite exciting to be sure but my shot was ruined by a guy starting his very loud Harley not 40 feet from my target just a split second before I clicked the shutter Humans... who needs 'em Glad you got your capture!.
