Good morning
Having seen some great examples of landscape interpretations on this forum I was tempted to have a shot myself. The departing moon at sunrise caught my eye.

Advice and critique most welcome.

Canon 1D3 Sigma 50mm-500mm 120mm CWA ISO800 Expb -1 f/7.1

Thanks for looking

Hi Barry,

Thats an impressive sight. Lovely colour tones and soft lighting. I think the moon needs to be offset and not central though.

Well seen

Regards

Rob

I know little about landscapes, but like the way we are led in by the f/g mist then trees, fields and that wonderful moon. Superb light as well.

Hi Barry,
Wonderful picture, but I agree with Rob. The moon should be off centre. I suppose this is the full picture. Next time turn you camera a little to the left so the mountain has more space and the moon on the same place but now on the right of the picture (1/3 rule may be).

Thanks for looking and comments.

Could someone explain the 1/3rds rule please I have seen the reference but I have no idea what it is. which may explain my level of expertise.

Thanks

I love the scale in this Barry - the conifers in the foreground look tiny which gives you this sense of being awed by the size of the landscape and moon. Agree that an off-centre comp for the moon may help.

Essentially the "rule of thirds" suggests (and its not a hard and fast rule) that if you imagine two pairs of lines - one vertical and one horizontal that split your viewfinder / image into equal thirds in each plane, then placing the subject of the image on one of the intersections, or on the line of a third, can help improve composition simply. So for example you could try a crop that placed the moon on the upper left-hand of the four intersections of these lines and see how it looks.

Hope that's helpful

Magnus

Thanks for the explanation I'll try and implement the rule I must admit I was holding off asking.
