Two Snipes - -Repost -
Common Snipe
I 've said a few times on this forum about not liking low angles and reflections too much. This picture shows partly why. One of the few times I turn the camera vertical, purely because it looks strange cutting a reflection in half. The result is an image with the subject small and not a lot of cropping choice.
Good enviro shot I suppose !
D200
Sigma 50-500mm.
500 ISO

Hello John

What a fabulous image I think this is one of your best shots that you have posted on here. I know you like a certain style but sometimes it is worth playing around and seeing what you can get. This looks just like a painting well done.

beautiful image, don't see the problem with not having much cropping choice, if it looks good why change it? the lighting here is lovely as is the setting

As Danny says John this one looks very much like a painting.
Good to see you getting a bit lower and soon we will be having you do the Limbo then it will be how low can you go. :toast:
Its a good looking image and you dont need to do any cropping IMO.

Major.

Thanks !
Its just the fact that with a picture like this it can only be cropped as it is. Thats ok if you get it right if you know what i mean I can't explain myself very well I'm affraid :frown:

John,
I think this is a super image. Lovely composition and colours. Why worry about cropping when it is as good as this? Fantastic.

Like this as it is John

Hi John,

I don't see any problem with the image compositionally. However, you do need to pull back the red balance as it has a red colour cast to it. Drop the red in color balance by, for example, Highlights -5; Midtones -12;, shadows -5; and it begins to look more the colour I'd anticipate.

Hi John,

Nice shot. Agree with Nick re colour. Also if youstare at the haed of the Snipe the Snipe moves about in the image, must be some visual trip going on, VERY WEIRD!!

Nice shot

Colour nit aside I'm with Danny - for me it's one of the best shots you've posted.

John

What a nice shot and a prime example of the great value of this forum. Individual taste and preferences come into play. Artistic interpretation needs variation.

I like it as it is why crop?

Thanks all.
All I was trying to say was that I can't crop this any other way and if I or someone else wanted a landscape of this it wouldn't be easy due to the reflection. The problem does show itself with the small birds in a pool I must admit..
Rob - Don't understand what you mean about the bird moving about
Nick- I do tend to go for the warmer colours don't know why.

Ps The Bur Marigold (Bidens cernua) in the background is the dominant plant on this site and as it dies down it takes on a subtle dark reddish hue this time of year.

Somewhere between the two I am thinking John, I like this and agree with the comments that it may be one of your best, I remember transparancies and one really had to compose in camera....

Thanks

We all have different preferences and if we can go to the lengths of taking twigs out etc etc, then colour in my opinion can be changed too.
I still cannot understand the difference between a colour cast and colour reflected off vegetation for example especially at extreme ends of the day.
If someone likes a picture - that's all that matters really.
By the way the fallow have just started after the frost last night.

John - I thought the colours in your first post were magnificent, a really beautiful composition. The second one is nice too but I do prefer the original.
I like all your pictures!!

John,

The second one is to far the other way. If you take the original into PS and apply Auto colour correction you will see a more mid way correction.

For someone who professes to dislike shots with reflections in them you seem to very good at taking them John  I'm not keen on your PPing but it's a fabulous shot.

Thank- Paul . Thats the whole point - there are times when one has no choice and on this occasion it was impossible to take anything without them ! :frown: : As I have tried to explain - with the camera horizontal it cuts the reflection in half and that dont look good in my view. As for the PP - some like it - some don't.Isn't that what this wonderful hobby is all about ?
Cheers
