Blue Lakes Trail in Fall?

We're in Ridgway this week, and I was thinking about hitting the Blue Lakes trail from the bottom up. (Dallas Creek up to the bottom Blue Lake as far as we can go.)

Is that doable this time of year, or is it more of a spring/summer thing?

Wasn't sure how it would be since I'm assuming at least part of it would be above the snow line.

Anyone have any insight?

Thanks,
-Luke

Luke, I did it later than this a couple years ago, in late October I think. If I recall, there had been one substantial storm, and there was a fair amount of snow above the first lake. But it was very doable on a nice day, and we got up to Blue Lakes Pass with no problems. I'd say it's worth your while.

Thanks Jackson!

Monte Trumbull was desperately hoping I would get some negative feedback as I don't think he wants to hike. (Actually I KNOW he doesn't want to hike.) He's been hitting refresh on this thread for the last 15 minutes dreading the responses! Looks like he has a workout ahead of him tomorrow!

I'd say it would be a doable hike from the bottom up. It's a beautiful location, but I'll also say that there really are not many aspens up there. Its mostly pine/spruce/fir.

Thanks for the info. Kind of assumed no aspens, but it's been bald blue skies here, and we need to switch it up a bit.

Looks like it's about 3.5 miles to the bottom lake from the top? Also looks like it's best for a morning shot?

FWIW, here's an essay I wrote about a hike to Blue Lakes some years ago:

I just flew over the San Juans yesterday and there's just a light dusting of snow on the very peaks. The fall color is still gorgeous!
