Upper Palouse falls (rapids)
After seeing Sean Bagshaw's wonderful twilight photo of Palouse falls over at ESS I thought I would add this shot from just 1/4 mile upstream. Wanted to show more of the topography of this area that was carved out by the great Missoula floods. The floods carved the North/South channels through the lave flows and then the river cut through the weak spots to travel southwest. The main falls drops from this level just past the point you can see on the right. This was 2 weeks ago. Must be much more water in the spring.

Hi Jerry. I see that i am going to have to hike the trail next time i am there. From bright greens in the spring to dead brown in the fall, what a difference the season makes their.

I know this spot Jerry. Your image does do a great job showing the topography, especially how the river makes a 90 degree left turn when it runs into this particular basalt wall blocking its path. Like you say, the next 90 degree turn is the one that drops 150 feet into the lower canyon. It is a tricky path that the river has cut through the maze like landscape.
