Poxed this guy this evening in the twilight on Knockadoon Head in East Cork. Lighting was appaling, crap background, the works etc. First time I've seen one of these in Ireland, saw one last weekend on Jura, maybe it followed me back. Watched this guy for an hour quartering the ground and hunting. Magnificent sight. Does anyone know if they stick on the same hunting grounds over the winter or do they move about alot. 40D, Sigma 500mm 4.5 MJ

Aha - didn't see this before my post. Nice image given the conditions you describe. Aren't they fantastic to watch? I had never seen one 'til recently and had to look them up in a book. They seem to stay in some areas if there is sufficient food - I'm sincerely hoping my new friends will stay. Good luck!

Hi Michael,
Nice record shot considering the conditions. as Ian says, it's all to do with prey, if it's plentiful it should stick around, then again saying that I had 2 SEO spend the winter in Suffolk last winter on nothing more than rough margins/verges in mostly large arable fields!
As regards prey I have been making enquiries with those in the know and it appears that despite the crap weather it was a bumper year for prey. So fingers crossed this guy will stay and I'll get better light
