Callumet is now shipping the Canon 50d body and mine will be here tommorrow. I am EXCITED! Review to follow, I am presently shooting the 20D, so this should be one heck of an improvement. :jump: :jump: :jump:

Congrats, Jeff. That'll be a BIG upgrade. I've got a friend who has had the 50D for about a week and reports excellent noise performance at those really high isos, although he also reports visible banding at iso 12800.

Congrats Jeff! I am also looking at getting the 50D. I have been playing with one at my local Camera store the last few days and am very impressed so far. They let me take a number of test shots with my own CF card and lenses. I brought the images home but I can't open the RAW files with the version of DPP that shipped with my 20D nor can I open them with Elements 5.0. I have not checked to see if there is a patch availble for PSE5 yet. The jpegs look good though.
Enjoy and post some pics!

John, Adobe won't provide an updated RAW plug-in for the 50D on anything but its latest version of Photoshop or Photoshop Elements. DPP versions from before the 50D came out won't likely be updated either.

In the past, Canon has always provided free upgrades of DPP provided you have an original version of the program loaded from the disk that came with a Canon camera. You can probably download an updated version of DPP.

As for Adobe, they've found the golden goose. Ever changing camera raw versions have created the scenario needed to force you to upgrade even when you don't need new functionality. The failure of camera companies to use a standard raw format has actually benefited Adobe greatly. However, ACR 4.6 is out and is supposed to have 50D support. ACR 4.6 can be used on CS3.

Mel, didn't you hit that one on the head!

Adobe and Canon goofed up on this one. Guess they had two too many martinis during one of their bigwig conspiracy lunches. If Adobe would just have put CS4 on the shelf a bit earlier or Canon delayed the 50D release a little more, we'd have had to buy CS4 to get ACR for the 50D. What were they thinking?

Thanks for the info on the DPP upgrade, Mel. I looked for a DPP upgrade not long ago to download and couldn't find it, so assumed it was the same deal.

Congrats on getting the 50D. I've had mine a week, and am really enjoying it. I've posted 2 avian shots and macro/close-up image in the last few days. The high ISO capability is nice :).

Congrats Jeff, looking forward to seeing your 50D images and hearing your report!

Yes, Adobe did find that golden goose, but IF you have CS3 (or a version of Elements that uses ACR)... ACR 4.6 uploaded today if you get the free automatic updates. Adobe already had the beta version available to download, so they were not that far behind.

I just ordered a 50D today. My old 20D broke down after 57,484 shots, and it will take 3 weeks to fix, so I ordered my next camera earlier than planned. I had originally planned on a 5D mk II, with the 24-105, but had to cancel all my consulting work for the rest of the year when I got sick, so I can't justify the price right now. But I'm sure I'll be happy with the 50D from what I have heard so far. (And if I start making money again, I'll be happy to have the 1.6 crop 50D even if I do add a full-frame camera to the arsenal. )

All you guys getting the 50D - I'd love to get your comments on the dynamic range of the camera (same as the 20D or 40D, or less), as well as the noise at ISO 6400 for actual prints (not at 100% on screen).

If ISO 6400 can deliver a good 8x12 print, that would make me ecstatic.
