Preston warned us about how heavily it was snowing on Sonora Pass but the snow seemed to stop and we were so jazzed about the color that we decided to try it anyway.
The road was clear and the snow had mostly stopped. However when we drove into Chipmonk Flat, it started snowing really hard and we didn't want to get stuck there. I promised my wife that I was just going to photograph this amazing cottonwood and then we could leave.
I worked as fast as I could using a 1 second shutter speed to blur the snow. I ran back to the car but by the time we got back on CA 108, the snow had stopped again.

The contrast in color and luminosity really works well to pull my eye through this image. It's a little hard to tell at this web presentation, but it looks like that cottonwood has a really interesting branch structure as well. Well worth the stop IMO.

Dan,
Wonderful contrast of subjects. I like the cool tones overall, really shows the cold well. The bare-ness of the cottonwood is a bit of a let down for me though.

i like the v shaped framing created by the green dark tone trees giving way to the subject.

This looks so beautiful Dan. The contrasting colors and the placement of subject makes the image for me.
Nicely seen and the framing is excellent, Dan. The Astia did a real nice job in overcoming some of the deeper shadows too, which is real nice in a deep forested area where the light can be so subdued.

Dan,
It looks like your trip up there really paid off. Nice capture. I really like the 3-D effect and the framing of the cottonwood turning color. Very nice indeed.
Does anyone know if there are any Cottonwoods further West?

Beautiful image Dan, the Cottonwood really shows itself between the dark framing, well done

Dan,
I was wondering if you made it up to Sonora Pass and it looks like that despite the weather, you managed to capture a number of worthy images. I think the lighting caused by the weather and the use of the Astia rendered this scene very nicely; the yellows of the cottonwood are especially nice. I only with the pine/firs on the left weren't so heavy in the composition, but that's a minor nit with this excellent capture. I really like this Dan.
