I'm starting to get some of my CA fall trip images processed. Again, thank you to everyone who offered tips, suggestions and location info - it was very helpful!
We left Portland on Friday afternoon (9/26) and stopped near Lassen Volcanic National Park that night. Saturday morning, we took the route through the Park before heading towards Bishop, and I'm glad we did - sometimes we get into the 'horse heading to the barn' mindset and miss out on the gems along the way.
Given that we were a little early for color in the canyons around Bishop, I wish we had stayed a day in the park. Looks like a fascinating area (especially if you're into geology).
This was taken shortly after sunrise, not far from the road, south of Emerald Lake. Comments and critiques are always welcome.

Welcome to CANP. What interesting colors and textures. I would like to see the shadows opened a little. I've never been to Lassen. I've always wanted to go.
Rick, the meandering hillside has some really nice tones, colors, & textures here, as well as an interesting look to the terrain overall. I have only had the chance to visit Lassen once in the past. It is a real gem of a park and does not receive a tremendous amount of visitors usually. The July visit my wife and I made years back now there was snow roof top high to our SUV along the roads in certain places that late in the year still.
Nicely captured first light. I like the highlights on the tops of the bushes and the curves of the bushes and land. Nice combo of the warm and cool tones, too.

Rick,
Glad to hear you had a successful trip to CA. Too bad we didn't get to meet up with you.
I completely agree with you about the "horse leading to the barn" mindset as I suffer from this more often than I like. You were rewarded for stopping for this one. This is all about the light and how it accentuates the forms, shapes and lines of the scene. Beautifully captured.

Wow Really like how you've captured the light scraping across the scene Rick.
I'm really into geology and haven't had the chance to make it up there yet. Hope to soon.
