Hi Folks,
Been trying out some Fungi photography myself for the first time..
For this particular set up I went to my local NR and with the use of a dark, green fleece as a BG and on-borad flash for fill-in, set about trying to ascertain the best DOF I could in order to encompass the globe like cap of this specimen.. Any tips on use of DOF with this subject would be greatly received..
Anyway, a trial version and edited on the uni comp, uncalibrated so be gentle.. LOL!
Kind regards,
Brett.

Dark green fleece for BG.!
Looks to me like you have pretty much nailed this one... f32 is pushing though regards diffraction, as the subject isn't going anywhere I would be tempted to focus stack using a much wider aperture.

a well executed shot, but I agree with Phil about preferring to focus stack rather than f32. When photographing fungi I will sometimes take a shot wide open to smooth the background and then take 1 or more shots at f16 or thereabouts to get the rest in focus. I'm never a huge fan of black backgrounds, although I realise some people do like them. But I think you've achieved exactly what you intended to with this shot - good exposure and DOF.

I am no fan of black backgrounds (except for suitable subjects, such as owls), but I think here you have made a great job of it. The textures on the skin of the fungus are well reproduced and the lighting seems excellent.

Thanks guys, having read around a bit I also spent time at a park abundant in Fly agarics over the weekend and shot using a range of apertures on a single subject in the hope to try and initiate myself in the uses of image stacking.. Your suggestions and comments are mcuh appreciated.
Any sites/publications where I might get some advice about image stacking..? Please send via e-mail if you have any thoughts.
Kind regards,
Brett

Interesting subject focus stacking. Phil must have some good systems.
Flash worked well on this shot, I've never had any joy when using flash.
