i have been having some banding issues within the last inch or so of my prints. this is more of a problem with smooth toned prints (smooth gradients of color).. this is unaceptable for me and i dont know how to fix it.. when i print i use adobe photoshop 5.0 and send the image to the printer with high speed off.. the print head and alignment tests are all perfect.. help

Is this a fairly recent occurrence? Have you changed paper types?
Have you tried printing via the printer driver rather than PS (5?) yet to see if the banding still occurs?

R1800 and 2100 has got this issue. Just try to do the standard tests like nozzle clogging test etc if not then I think it is the wheels which cause this problem too. I've to find out the information I have saved somewhere and will get back to you.

My 1800 died from this and two 2400 as well each having a life span of a little over one year. Epson's designated repair shop gave me an estimate of $550 for repair on the most recent 2400. No more Epsons for me. Have switched to Canon for now. Have a ton of ink cartridges for the 2400 if anyone is interested.

My R1800 does this too. It's very visible in smooth skies, etc. Unlike yours though, mine tends to do this through the whole image. If I run the printer through several (5 or more!) cleaning cycles it usually clears up for a few days. It's very frustrating. The humidity where I live is generally very low so I think that may be a contributing factor. I've owned a regular small Epson printer several years ago and had clogged jets all of the time too.
The other problem I have with this printer is that it has a very hard time feeding paper.

Needless to say, printing anything is an extremely frustrating exercise for me.

I have this problem on papers like Epson Exhibition or Ilford GFS. I have never had this problem on any other type of paper in the 4+ years I've owned my R1800. On the Baryta papers, I suspect the problem is a result of the driver trying to set the paper height or print head height at the wrong level. Epson does not support their Exhibition paper on any printer that is not a K3 printer.

I have occasionally had banding issues on my standard papers and they have always been related to ink clogs.
