GND filters - P series or 4x6 ?

May be this was discussed here before, but let me ask again:

I am in the middle of replenish/ upgrade my GND filters and wondering should I go for bigger 4x6 size filters with appropriate filter holder (e.g. Cokin Z-pro) or not?

Currenly I have Cokin P-series holder with GNDs from Lee. But at the 12-15 mm wide angle range, I can't use the holder and always handhold. I don't mind handholding, but for very long exposure, it's just not practical.

I am sure that many of you faced this question before. So, I like to get some opinion. Thanks a lot

Hi Arnab,
I use P size as well, and I had the same issue when using filters on my 12-24. I solved it with the P size wide angle holder
This holder is thinner of the normal one, and can only accept 2 square (or rectangular) filters OR a polarizer. So you can stack within the holder a solid ND and a GND for example, but NOT a polarizer and a GND.
I always use this holder on my 12-24. You can actually use a polarizer and a GND together, but you need a threaded polarizer that you put directly on the lens, then you stack the holder with the GND on the polarizer. It's a kind of a mess, as you have to rotate the polarizer while holding the P holder. But with a bit of patience, it works.
Ah, if you stack the holder on the polarizer, you have to zoom up to 15mm, otherwise the holder shade will be clearly visible at the extreme borders of the frame.

I actually have the wide angle holder, but still I can't use it on my 12-24 Tokina lens in the range 12-14 (without polarizer). You must be using Nikon 12-24 - is that so?

Ehm, no Arnab, I do have a Tokina as well! That's quite strange, as I really have no issues with that holder, I can extend the zoom at its widest end without vignetting. Sincerely, I can't figure out why you're having troubles. Perhaps a different design in the holder? Do you have the original Cokin or a third party?

I use the P holder, and with my Tokina ATX 12-24 I get severe vignetting between 12-14mm. For the cost difference between the P and the larger filters I'm OK with the vignetting issues. If I have to I can always handhold at 12-14 or in some cases perform some cloning to rectify.

If you want to be able to stack several filters together (e.g. polarizer, grad and solid ND filter) on wide angle zooms then you should move up to the Cokin Z-Pro or Lee holder which holds the larger 4x6 filters. I use the Z-Pro holder with a Cokin Z164 drop-in polarizer and 4x6 inch grads and solid NDs' I do not get vignetting with either my 17-40 on a full frame camera or a 10-22 on an APS-sized sensor. crop camera?

I have the Tokina 12-24 on a D300, and can't use the Cokin Wide-Angle Holder, due to vignetting. On that lens, I have just learned to hand-hold my GND's instead.

Don, yes, of course mine is a crop camera. I used the Eos 400D till two weeks ago, and now I'm shooting the brand new 50D.
Now I see why you guys have been experiencing the same vignetting problem with the Tokina 12-24 and the wide angle P holder: you all shoot Nikons!
Nikons crop factor is 1.5x, while Canons are at 1.6x. It's definitely that 0.1x in the crop factor that makes the difference. Another reason for being happy to shoot Canon...

Cheers,

I made the COkin Z Pro choice......and use HiTech 4x6 filters to use with my Canon 20d and Tokina 12-24.
If I take off the last extension on that holder, I can stack 2 filters over my threaded polarizer, all the way to 12mm. Just barely though. I'm on the lookout for a circular polarizer that fits in the holder and doesn't cost 300$, but for now, I just monkey around with the threaded polarizer before putting on the holder.
