Since I first took up this hobby, I’ve always wondered why my web images lose colour and definition when converted from the Raw/Tiff (using PS3). Every time, I had to make alteration to contrast and saturation after converting to sRGB for posting. Last night I discovered it pays to read the manual! I learned that a better way is edit>convert to profile then select sRGB. The image looks identical and is posted on the web exactly the same as on screen! I had previously used edit >colour settings> sRGB.

I have probably saved myself a lot of time and all my images look a lot better! Am I the only numpty? Is that what others do?

As an example, here is a recent post as it should have looked, which can be compared with the one posted here

Hi Ian

For most web images it is best to convert to sRGB and embed the profile.

This is because the vast majority of PC software is not colour managed. Internet Explorer does not read the profile information in a photo and assumes it is sRGB.

The Safari browser DOES use the embedded profile so will display Adobe RGB images correctly if the profile is embedded.

Adobe Flash is not colour managed so if you display images in a flash gallery or slideshow then you are best converting to sRGB first.

On a PC even if you profile your monitor the profile is only used by programs which access the profile information from the operating system, e.g. PhotoShop, Lightroom, Breezebrowser, etc.

Colour management for the web is a generally a big headache, but convert to sRGB and you will be generally OK.

regards

Sean
