10/24 UPDATE: Canon has posted the 5D Mark II manuals in PDF format.
----------------------------------------------
(I did post this a couple weeks ago in General, but so much has come out since then, and the PNW crew is apt to leap on this camera more than other forums, I'm re-posting it just once more for this forum.)
A lot of web pages are popping up with features and tutorials (especially for video) on the new 5D. Since there is so much, I've built a website that houses all the decent links I could find, in one nice neat place, so y'all don't have to search around the muck on the web. Here's the site. Not great, I barely know any web design, but the goal is just to have all info in one place... and no, I'm not getting any kickback from ANYONE nor would I want that. I'm just shamelessly promoting the site so interested folks have an easy place to find the latest info (and I wanted to have a crack at making a website to see what it's all about!).
I know, I know, you'd think I'd have better things to do...

Paul - any idea from the reading if they are going to be shipping out early next month ?
I have no camera and I am desperate to go out and shoot !!!!!!

Me too, sold my 5D a week after the announcement. I'm going nuts!
I don't know the status of shipping yet, no one's mentioned a word, but I may start pushing for info. ANYTHING I find out I'll let you know.

I can't wait for it either.. I'm keeping my original 1D2 as a back-up, and I'm buying a 16-35L II this week in anticipation of having it for full-frame..

Unless your on a pre-order waiting list, you'll be hard pressed to get one this year. At-least, thats what I'm hearing from many many sources. First shipments to arrive mid to late November.
If you do want to get on a waiting list, call Calumet Photo and ask for Steve Martin (tell him Matt Anderson sent you, maybe he'll move you up a bit on the list). He's a very knowledgeable pro-sales associate that I've had nothing but good luck with. He's fortified studios I've had to make purchases order for the past few years. $250,000 later and I have no complaints.
P.S. Pick up a Rebel XSi in the mean time. It's a nifty little camera that will keep you shooting without missing a beat. You can sell it on Fred Miranda when your 5DMKII arrives with very minimal loss. Thats what I'm doing.
Regards

Matt, that's a great idea. I missed the pre-ordering at Amazon (I have to buy there because I have GC's from Amazon Visa points that will help me reach the price), so I'm going to be waiting longer than 2 months, probably 4. Even if I take a $100 loss on the resale that's basically $25/month rental. Money well-spent to keep me from going batty.

Paul - I spend some good time talking with someone from the Canon tech team. He said to me in honesty there is alot of pressure to get it out by the end of November and that does not seem even remotely possible at this point and the first shipments will be more likely the middle to the end of December even though the 19th is the supposed launch date.

That's good info and I guess not surprising. Since I missed the pre-order at Amazon I probably won't have a chance to get mine until February (guessing here).
You know, part of me is OK with waiting for the second round. Having worked in manufacturing for a number of years, the "meet the quota" panic on the production line always increases the ratio of bad units getting shipped out the door. It's also a new model so the workflow of assembly needs to settle into place. I think the production bugs will more likely be ironed out by February or later.
Guess I'm ordering the Xsi for the interim. $584.95 at B&H with free shipping. Not a bad body: 12MP, 14-bit converter, DIGIC III processor, 3" LCD, LiveView, 35-segment metering and a self-cleaning oven.

Adorama told me this morning that they were expecting to start receiving cameras from Canon around 11/10, but who knows how accurate that is.
I already sold my camera too, so I'm in the same boat.

OK, somebody get a hold of Jim Erhardt and tell him we need a new dedicated forum, the You had a 5D but now it's sold and you're going nuts waiting for Canon who'll finally deliver in Q2 2009 forum.
Posted by Paul DeCesare on October 24, 2008 at 11:53 AM
I just came across this thread on CanonRumours.com... the person posting said that Adorama is claiming a delivery date on NEXT WEEK. Hmmmm.... [need a raised-eyebrow smiley here]

Check THIS site out... actually tracks who is/was taking pre-orders and stock levels. The web is one wild place of information.

Ooops....Rick mistyped that....Our 5D's are on order with Canoga. They fortunately allowed me to select "call with credit info" instead of entering credit info at time of order. All this said, we spent a weekend shooting with dear friends, and now I lust after a 1DMIII as well....
gear head signing off.....
oh -- I thought I saw B&H website says estimated availability is December...

Paul, I'll rent ya my 10D for very cheap!
Seriously, I would say get the 50D instead of the rebel. Or a G10. Nancy
Posted by Paul DeCesare on October 27, 2008 at 4:20 PM
Hey Nancy, believe me, I'd take you up on the 10D rental if I could guarantee I wouldn't damage it in any way!
I was thinking of the Xsi because it's only $579 and I'll need to sell it when the 5D2 is released. In ratio I'm thinking I'll lose less on the resale with the cheaper camera (I think!).
Actually, the G10 or even a good used G9 is a good idea, I don't HAVE to use my lenses (I have two: 70-200mm/2.8 and a 17-40mm). I can see one huge problem with buying the G9 or G10 though: I can almost guarantee I won't want to sell it! Have a look at Darwin Wigget's site, he's got a page dedicated to G9 images. Seriously good camera!
I got my hands on a 5DMK2 today at Pro Photo Supply as the Canon reps were there. I am jealous of those who will be getting one. It is a very robust tool and very capable. I got some hands on with a D700 as well and it's going to be a hard choice but that MK2 is an amazing camera. I really don't know if I want to go through the hassle of changing systems.
