Ok, so little to do with nature, but I too have a few Bodie images from our little CANP gathering a few weeks ago.

This was my last image of the day and the flag of course is what caught my eye. So, I thought a little b&w masking would showcase the flag nicely. What do you think?

I like this, Lon. The masking treatment worked nicely. You might take a look at punching up the whites a bit so that the flag pops a little more. The composition is well thought out and the detail in the low values gives this nice depth. Good Job!

When I want to punch up the 'whites' without affecting overall contrast I use a 'Selective Color' adjustment layer. In the dropdown list select 'Whites' and then adjust the 'Black' slider to add or subtract black. It's a handy trick.

I'm looking forward to more Bodie shots.

Lon, this is really neat and I like the idea of the flag isolated in color. It really brings out the focus on the flag, but keeps the old Bodie look to everything else also. Great idea overall there. I do see Preston's point on the punch though. Seems just a bit flat on my monitor too.

Lon,

Good job on the masking, but for some reason it just is not working for me as an image on the whole with just the flag in color. Seems to contrived.

The masking works for me... especially since it emphasizes Old Glory. I like your use of the window frame to divide the image up. Some selective contrast enhancement to the interior items and window reflections might give a little added punch. Nicely seen!

Youssef,

If you had ever been INside the buidlings in Bodie... there are "many" places where the
rest of the room has faded due to the sun, but some places things have been protected
and are FULL of color... so this one fits right in....
Lon... Good Job...
You should see the colors up inside the old Ballroom where they use to have Galas
above the Old Miner's Hall... the more depressing the Life the brighter the colors they seem to use
I guess to cheer themselves up. Good tip for the whites, Preston, thanks...
Lon... OK... can you "remember" at that elevation what building that was?
Is that a telephone pole reflection in the right half of the window?
Lon, you "almost" got a level image out of Bodie... nice try :toast:

*cheers*
Nelcha
I would LOVE to get all of you INside the buildings
Thanks for sharing another bit o'Bodie...

Thanks folks! I see what you mean about getting the flag to pop a little more and I played around with that. But I kinda wanted it more towards the faded side to go with the period and age (although the flag is certainly not as old as the building.)

Youssef - yes, certainly contrived, which was kinda the point. I'd never done anything like this seriously in PS before, but this image almost told me to... :-)

Nelcha - elevation was 8,381ft according to Google Earth..... :-) and I'm pretty sure the building was the Miners Union Hall (location from memory, building name from bodie.com)

Thanks. I may post another but don't have anything to rival Harley's windows.

Yup Lon... that's the elevation
and the Miner's Union is now the Bodie Museum which they close after Labor Day...reopens Memorial Day.
Inside there is the BIG Miner's Union Flag that I have in my Bodie Portfolio on my website.
If you were standing on the boardwalk and there was a wooden bench on each side of the front door
then that's the place... Just South of the Mortuary on the corner.
The only other flag I have seen visible thru a window is in the schoolhouse.
Thanks for the feedback Lon...
Might be some snow there this weekend?
