Red Deer Stag (Flehman not fleming)
I really love this pose when the Red Deer Stags are tasting the air for the scent of the females, it is only brief and you don't see it too often. I had got myself in position close to a group of females that were feeding in the bracken and then this guy appeared and gave me the oppportunity to capture this intimate pose.

Canon 1D MK11, 500mm lens, 1/80, F4, ISO 200.

Greetings Danny, another nice capture. It's spelt Flehmen - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flehmen - but sounds close to your phonetic spelling without a strong 'g' :wavey:

Perfect use of DOF keeping the viewers attention focused on the stunning subject. A pleasure to look at.

For those who are interested he's not using the scent receptors in his nose, he's using an organ called the Vomeronasal Organ (AKA Jacobson's Organ). You can also see that deer don't have any upper front teeth. Instead they have a horny plate and tear off vegetation rather than bite it.

Nice shot Danny.

Very nice Danny. Just to follow on from Paul their oral arrangement means that the stems ripped off have a tuft on one side which can be helpful in determining whether they frequent an area
