Yes I know that I'm way out of date, but I only have the original version of Photoshop CS on my computer and hadn't found the need to upgrade to CS2, CS3, CS4 etc. Other priorities have put my photography on the back burner for a while. However, I just got a Canon 50D and can't open it's RAW files. Is there a download to correct this without having to get the latest version? Any assistance would be much appreciated.

There are no further updates available for ACR in PS CS.
You can either use the DPP software that came with your camera to edit and then convert your RAW files to TIFF files for export to PS, or convert the RAW files to DNG file format which will enable you to open them in your version of Adobe Camera Raw.
PS CS4 will allow you to upgrade from CS, but this will be your last chance to upgrade the software without paying full price for the next version (CS5).

John has nailed it and told you really everything you need to know. I just want to add encouragement for you to upgrade from CS, especially if CS4 is your last chance. I don't have CS4 myself yet but I can swear to you that the enhancements in CS3 compared to CS make it WELL worth your while to upgrade. Go ahead. You got a great camera. Now get the most out of the files!! Good luck.

Beginning with CS2 Adobe made some real improvements to PS that benefited digital photographers: Smart Sharpen, to name one. I haven't upgraded to CS4 yet, but CS3 works better for me than any of its predecessors.

As John suggests, Adobe Digital Negative will get you the conversion you need right now, but it's an extra, annoying and time-consuming step on every import from your camera. Spring for the upgrade.

Couldn't have said it better myself.
I jumped from CS to CS3 and it was well worth the $$$. CS4 will be even more worth the leap.

Michael, even if you're shooting jpeg rather than RAW, CS3 or better is great to have. One of the added options in CS3 allows you to open the RAW preview screen for jpeg images and make the same types of adjustments only available with RAW images through CS and CS2.

I'm pretty much finished shooting RAW now (as time goes on the advantages of RAW seem to have less and less meaning), but will be upgrading to CS3 or CS4 partly so I can do with a jpeg what I can only now do with RAW (I use CS2).
